Up until the early 1990’s consumers were effectively restricted in their choice of Telecommunication service supplier to either BT or Mercury. However in 1991 the Duopoly Review carried out by Oftel (Office of Fair Trading for Telecommunications) set the framework to allow competition on a broader basis, and this as such has increased the freedom of choice for business and residential customers in the UK.

Since 1991 the UK market has grown rapidly, with many new operators now marketing their services. The main recipient of this rapid increase of choice has been the business customer, particularly in the medium to large market segments.

Even though the current level of competition is relatively young, the effects of price decline are already being felt, particularly in the large customer applications, where customized tariffs are increasingly common (indeed One Stop Communications Telecoms Consultancy will recommend a supplier who will be able to tailor tariffs for all business users).
